The next Book Club Meeting will be a discussion on Chanrithy Him's "WHEN BROKEN GLASS FLOATS : GROWING UP UNDER THE KHMER ROUGE".

In the Cambodian proverb, "when broken glass floats" is the time when evil triumphs over good. That time began in 1975, when the Khmer Rouge took power in Cambodia and the Him family began their trek through the hell of the "killing fields." In a mesmerizing story, Him vividly recounts a Cambodia where rudimentary labor camps are the norm and technology, such as cars and electricity, no longer exists. Death becomes a companion at the camps, along with illness. Yet through the terror, Chanrithy's family remains loyal to one another despite the Khmer Rouge's demand of loyalty only to itself. Moments of inexpressible sacrifice and love lead them to bring what little food they have to the others, even at the risk of their own lives. In 1979, "broken glass" finally sinks. From a family of twelve, only five of the Him children survive. Sponsored by an uncle in Oregon, they begin their new lives in a land that promises welcome to those starved for freedom.

Amongst women aged between 15 and 44, acts of violence cause more death and disability than cancer, malaria, traffic accidents and war combined.

Shocked?

It's time the community took a stand against this heinous crime!

Hom Yoga and UN Women Singapore have teamed up on a new community project, as part of UN Women Singapore's "Help Anna" campaign to end violence against women.

The "Help Anna" Yoga Series will consist of four yoga events, which will occur through 2012. The Yoga Series will open with a Sun Salutations and Picnic event at the Botanical Gardens in May, followed by a Partner Yoga Clinic in July. In the latter half of the year, "Say No" Yoga Series will conduct a Yin-Yang Workshop in October and a Vinyasa Flow and Outdoor Picnic event at Fort Canning Park in November to commemorate The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women that falls on 25 Nov.

Hom Yoga and UN Women Singapore hope to use this series as a platform to encourage the public to take action to end violence against women and to educate others within their community to stop the cycle of abuse. Sunday, 6th May 2012
6:30pm | library@esplanade, 8 Raffles Avenue, #03-01

Free admission
Enquiries: ooom.sg@gmail.com

OOOM is Singapore's first social open mike. Initially an acronym for "Originals Only Open Mike," OOOM now stands simply for Peace and welcomes performances of not just original songs, but also of covers and even poetry. It is a platform for celebrating creativity, enjoying the arts, and encouraging community bonding and peacebuilding through the universal language of music. OOOM will commemorate special days like the United Nations "International Day Of Families," and celebrate the good work of organisations in the social and humanitarian space. Anyone can sing and recite poetry at OOOM. Performance slots are open for registration at the venue half an hour before the open mike, and pre-registration can be done via email (ooom.sg@gmail.com). OOOM will regularly invite Featured Artistes to perform a short set to inspire budding singer-songwriters and performers.

On 6th May 2012, UN Women Singapore collaborates with OOOM to stand up against the human atrocity of sex trafficking. "Sound Out Against Sex Trafficking" is a UN Women Singapore initiative that rallies some of the country's most talented singers and songwriters to use music to help spread the word about the NGO's efforts against sex trafficking. Music can make you happy or sad. It can make you dance with joy or shout at the world. It has no language, no age and no cultural barriers. Music is a reflection of the human spirit, bringing us together and giving our voices strength.

Come support UN Women Singapore's struggle against sex trafficking and catch some of Sound Out's music collaborators as they join other performers and singer-songwriters at Singapore's first and only social open mike, OOOM.
